[s-cars] Tire choices for S-carTheodore Chen tedebearp at yahoo.comTue Jul 22 21:26:49 PDT 2008
the g-force KDWS on my car have about 25k miles on them. plenty of tread left, and they're still quiet. it may depend on which g-force model is being reviewed. i fully intend to get another set when these wear out. they've never stranded me in the snow (this car has made many trips to lake tahoe), and they have very good traction in dry/wet conditions. the KDWS has been discontinued, but i expect the supersport A/S to be as good if not better. one of the things i really like about these tires is the sharp steering response, which comes from the performance-oriented carcass. it's the same carcass used on the KD (which is a maximum dry performance tire). -teddy ----- Original Message ---- From: LL - NY <larrycleung at gmail.com> To: Theodore Chen <tedebearp at yahoo.com> Cc: theringmeister at triad.rr.com; djdawson2 at aol.com; bob at chips-ur-s.com; s-car-list at audifans.com; bluevr6 at yahoo.com Sent: Tuesday, July 22, 2008 7:29:08 PM Subject: Re: [s-cars] Tire choices for S-car Overall, I have been pretty happy with BFG's, although reviews as of late of the G-force series seems to point to them getting noisy as they wear. I too had CompTA R1's as my replacement for my Yok A008 RS2's for autocross, and they really transformed the car (I also had street CompT/A HR's and HR4's on my 4KSQ. Haven't done too much for street BFG's as of late (but will be getting the new G-force R1's next season for autocross, mebee, still deciding) but if I go all-seasons for the DD, I'm considering the G-force SuperSport A/S, which have been receiving rave reviews. I'm just curious how they wear. Most people I know that have them rave about them. Each to his own, I guess. I have had a set of 235/40/18's on both my B5 S4 and B5 A4.? They worked extremely well, and I enjoyed the handling.? However, handling was not the primary goal.? I also have a set of 235/45/17's on my '91 200 20v, and have been equally impressed. On a bang for the buck yardstick, they are an awefully good value.? Read the feedback on the Tire Rack site, and you'll see that I'm not alone.? Likewise, see how often they are out of stock, and you'll validate their popularity. As far as the other options on his list...? Sumitomo?HTR-Z (both 1 and 2)?I absolutely hate.? I've tried?both versions, and didn't like any of them.? Kumho ECSTA's are OK, but I didn't like them better than the Generals. I can't really comment on the Fuzions... I've never tried them.? I have never liked Falken tires, but haven't tried the Azenis.? However, I have changed Azenis tires for others, and they seemed to wear weird,?much like?the Sumitomos. The Dunlop SP8000s will provide the best handling of the group, but they don't last long and they are very noisy. My wife's Scoobie-doo forester 2.5XT has a set of these tires in 245 R 17 size. The sidewalls are far too soft and flexible. I found it necessary to inflate these tires up to the sidewall maximum (51 psig IIRC) to get any road feel at all. At dealer recommended tire pressures it felt as if the car was supported on a bowlful of jelly. Turn the wheel and eventually the car would respond once the extra flex of the sidewall was consumed. At the higher pressure this is improved but still is not gone. It is a very disconcerting ride for someone used to the handling of the usual stiff sidewall Z-rated tires. I do not like them. I'm looking forward to the day they finally wear out and I can replace them with something -almost anything- else.? ? If you'd like I could tell you how I _really_ feel about them. ;-)? ? Of the remainder, I have had experience with only the Fuzion tires. I rather liked them for an inexpensive tire.? ? Bob? ?
