Why would replacing the temp sensor in the "T" fitting affect fuel mileage?

My understanding is that particular temp sensor is for the HVAC controller
(so it can adjust for incoming coolant temp and regulate cabin temperature
accordingly).  I believe the temp sensor the Engine ECU monitors in regards
to fuel mixtures is the white 2 pin sensor on the rear of the head, above
the plastic fitting on the block (which feeds Douglas' broken "T" fitting
and the heater core).

You must have ignored a lot of emails on this subject, Douglas.
All these plastic connectors are brittle by now and are subject to  
failure at
any time.  This includes the thermostat housing of the same material.  
I would
source them all and replace at the same time.  It's not a big job and  
most of
the coolant has already been lost.  If the thermostat is old, replace  
it at the
same time and avoid breaking into the system again.  You may even find a
nice fuel mileage increase from changing the temperature sensor in  
the "T".

I know you said you are short of time but consider getting all the  
parts and
replacing them before you put $20 of coolant in there.  If you can't  
get the
tee fitting in time, you can use a copper pipe fitting to get home.
