I have done the water pump and timing belt without tearing
down the front of the car. It can be done if you remove the
grille, and loosen a few other bits. The bumper and lights
stay in place. Absolutely do the thermostat, and replace the
short 3/4 inch hose on the near side front of the engine

To do the distributor I would not remove the intake
manifold, but it's a piece of cake to remove the intake tube
and throttle body. With those out of the way, doing the
distributor, plug wires, breather hose, etc. is dead easy.
It is also a good time to clean the throttle plate and check
all the vacuum lines behind the engine for breaks, etc.
