For what it's worth, the website is back in place.  I'll have the old
archives available shortly complete with search capabilities.

I eventually dug the system out and traced the problem to a failed IDE
controller card.  Soon as it was removed, the system was stable, but still
suffering from a lot of filesystem damage. I saved most of the important
parts(web content, home directories(which includes all the archives), some
system configuration stuff) and did a fresh install.  It has been stable
for weeks so far.
