[200q20v] door lock repair...the final insult

To complete (at long last) my door lock replacement, I found another
lock-cylinder circlip (courtesy of a friendly, local Audi/VW repair
shop--Sutherland Auto) and replaced the "too loose" one. ( BTW, searching
the parts bin at a hardware supply shows that this circlip would be pretty
well matched by a 9/16" size.) The key worked perfectly to lock/unlock the
door and to properly arm the anti-theft system. Huzzah. So, all that was
needed now was to reassemble the door frame and trim panel. A no-brainer,
right?

Well it was-- until nearly the very last step which was when my brain did
really take a vacation. That's when I reattached the inside door release
cable to the lever and tried to fit the lever housing in the panel opening.
There was a bit of resistance--well, a _lot_ of resistance.  Ultimately I
discovered that my mistake was having inadvertantly left the securing screw
protruding at the rear of the housing--i.e., behind the release lever. When
I forcefully seated the lever/housing,  I discovered that this screw had
pushed against the plastic tab holding the screw-anchor (an integral part
of the door panel) and had broken the tab off!

So, now the door lever release works OK, but since there's no no place  to
secure it (using that screw), the entire lever housing will easily slide
forward and pop out of the door panel.   :-(  Am I the only fool who's done
this? IF not, have any of you _others_  come up with a way to keep this
assembly in place? I have retrieved the broken anchor tab and am
considering the possibility of using an epoxy putty to re-attach it. Other
ideas welcome.
