The shocks I have move evenly up and down, and can be adjusted from soft to very stiff.  One of the rear struts has a bit of rust on the upper portion of the shaft, which was removed with a scotch-brite pad; no fluid leakage.  Do you know how deep into the shock body the seals are located?
