Yes, I believe this one's in the category of "If it's broke _don't_ 
repair it, just replace it."). Unless of course you believe the 
thickness of your wallet is more important than your time, your peace 
of mind and the longevity of your $3K engine. The next stage of 
failure is rupture and rapid coolant loss.

An alternative, if wallet is extremely thin or you have to wait too 
long for a new pump to arrive, is to remove the leaking pump and 
connect the water hoses together with a "jumper" pipe (such as a 
copper 90 degree fitting). Then just be sure to allow adequate 
idle/cooldown time before shutting off engine.
