George,

Any rain involved?  Check condition/tension of the alt belt itself.  I had
similar symptoms - though only in the wet/rain - and it turned out to simply
be a glazed/slipping belt.  Tension was fine, trickled a bit of liquid on it
while running and watch the charging level drop off!!..  Maybe you'll be so
lucky.  Happy Holidays...
