Hmm...interesting dilemma.  Perhaps one of the temps sensors is faulty (one
in center of dash and the other by sunroof switch)?

Another possibility is that the small fan under the dash is inop and not
circulating the air and that the sun would hit that area, signaling the
controller that temp is higher than expected, with the climate control
adjusting accordingly.  Then, when there was no radiant heat source, it
would trigger the climate control to warm the cabin again.  Does this only
happen during the daytime on sunny/ partly sunny days, or also at night?

Flap problems (aside from the recirculation door spring problem) were pretty
much eliminated  in the late 1980's witht he installation of  an oil trap to
the climate control head.  Older audi's often had the controller suck in oil
through the vacuum lines, causing improper flap operation, or no operation
at all, but this only affected where the air was directed, not temperature
control.

Just a thought.
