swaybar removal is *NOT* a necessary component of ball joint checking, if you 
disconnect it the control arm from the strut.  That said, to ck a ball joint 
without disconnecting it from the strut is not a proper nor recommended 
procedure here.  There are too many variables in the suspension (including 
swaybar bushings) that could give a false sense that the ball joints are 
indeed good.   Failure can be catastrophic, btworkedonthat.

Remove the wheel
Remove the pinch bolt in the ball joint (always replace - per bentley)
Use 2X4 to separate ball joing from strut
Move ball joint around in all planes, it should be tight, with *NO* play in 
any plane
Replace control arm as necessary.
