 I have had similar problems. It's a bad connection somewhere on the circuit
board. Sometimes a hit on the top of the dash above the speedo works (not
too hard). I find that if you leave it alone it will usually  either go
blank and then reset itself after you go over a bump that is enough to "fix"
the connection, or just reset itself if the car  has been off for a while,
say overnight. Nothing major, just a PITA when it jumbles up or locks up.
Sometimes playing with the function button at the end of the wiper stalk
seemed to help reset  the computer after one of it's "blank" days. HTH
