My car is missing the cover for the fusible link and I
was wondering wouldn't an insulated wire of the
correct gauge serve the same purpose and not be

I'm no electrician or electrical engineer, but I'd assume the presence of insulation would affect the rate/point at which the wire melted...
plus, the ends of the wire would be exposed at the screws, still the potential for corrosion.

If the insulation doesn't affect the melting point, then why are the fusible links not painted?
