Neil,

Had a similar problem on my car when I had purchased it.  Didn't know much about the car, but did note on the drive home oil pressure was fine (5-bar), and there was no lifter noise.  I couldn't figure out how to fix the problem; e-mailed Mr Mockry, his response was to remove the cluster and use some connector cleaner to clean the connections on the back of the cluster, especially the jumper blocks between the speedo/instrument head and the circuit board.  Also used the opportunity to install a light bulb in the check engine light spot (can't remember the right name).  That fixed the problem up, and haven't heard back from it since.  

Symptoms in my car were very similar to what you described, my guess is the sure should be the same as well.
