[200q20v] shifter boot

Paul,
Please note that the shifter boot on the 200 is different from that
of the 5k. I don't know if you already know this, but I thought I'd put
that out there for clarification. Your solution would be a very good
one for the 5k- I will advise my friend who has wrecked the boot structure
that I put in my old 5ktq.

Chris, my boy, we've all been here before. The proper way would be for Audi
to sell the rectangular plastic bracket that mounts onto the bottom of the
shift boot. As the plastic ages, it gets brittle and the plastic tabs break
off. The usual case is that only one or two have broken off, but without all
four, the thing won't stay mounted. I used clear silicone caulk, a dab on
each corner (on mine, only one remained), to hold it down. If you want to
rework the shifter, simply pull the shift boot up forcefully. To reattach,
clean off the old caulk and reapply a dab at each corner. It's not as nice
as having the tabs, but works tolerably well and has the advantage of being
available.

rebuild the shifter or something?
