[200q20v] Injector test question, From radiator project

Question:
Since I have the intake manifold out of the car it probably makes sense to
test the injectors.

I would like to energize the injectors to view the spray pattern also check
the volumes.  The Bentley referenced several special tools to do the 30 sec
vol test.  What is the shade tree method to performing these tests?  What
about doing the output tests from the ECU per SJM?  

Also is it possible to pour some injector cleaner in the fuel rail, energize
the injectors thus performing a cleaning operation? Would this do any good?

Any advise?
