I think the switch is for 3rd through 5th.  I would very much like the
shorter 3rd gear, I think the current one is just a bit tall.

I'm thinking like you are, Phil: if I can get a new tranny for $1k+,
maybe its just good insurance, given that new ADZ's from Audi (if
available) are ridiculously expensive (didn't someone say $8k?).

Car still runs like a champ, so I'm hoping to drive it for a few more
years (saving the S4 for "recreational" use!).

PS: Regarding a 6-speed -- at least on my S4, it's pretty much a
marketing gimmick. Reasonable people (not counting yours truly) could
drive that car 1-2-6 without noticing a thing.  4, 5 and 6 are very
close together, and I've found no situation so far in which 5 was just
right and 6 a bit too high.
