Thanks, Mike, Derek, Joe, Jerald, Peter and List (aren't email lists
grand!).

I think the consensus of the list is that it is a turbo bypass valve.

The car dies while driving.  The turbo gauge shows boost up to 1.9 bar under
hard acceleration.

I'll try Mike Miller's method of diagnosing later tonight and report to the
list tomorrow.
