[200q20v] A/C System Charging

I've got a couple old cans of R-12 to charge up my A/C, but Bentley does not give much guidance to filling up the system.  There is reference to a "Service Valve" which sits to the left of the accumulator, in what I think is a high pressure line.  I thought A/C systems were supposed to be charged on the low pressure side.  If that is the correct access port, will the pressure of my R-12 can reach an equilibrium point at which the system is appropriately charged?  I'd assume the same questions would apply to R-12 substitute products.  Many Thanks.
