it's a great tip.  i'll have to try it the next time i break a bolt in
the water pump or something.

however, i think it's more likely that the heat from the welding was what
broke the stud loose.  after all, one of the tricks for removing frozen
bolts is to heat it or the surrounding material with a propane torch,
to cause expansion and contraction.  and welding makes the heat cycling
pretty extreme.  it's a great way to get the stud red hot quickly, and
without heating up the surrounding material too much.
