Kevin,
I've recently replaced my distributor and still have the old one around. The plastic gear on it is in good shape, and depending on terms I might be willing to send it on down to be used as a replacement gear template. I pesonally wouldn't worry about it unless the old gear goes to the grave, or your having other problems with your distributor setup.
Contrary to my old position (I was really pissed about having to replace my whole distributor because of hall sender, and oil leak problems), I don't think TPC's price (275 ish) is unreasonable for a new unit. That's just my take, but I am glad to have a car that now starts the first time I turn the key, every time... Also, a metal gear is not neccesarily going to be quiter; if I recall correctly, the going wisdom is part of the reason a plastic gear was used over a metal was for quiter operation. All that aside, it would be good to have a source for replacement gears, if somebody wanted to take that path.
Let me know what you think.

The distributor drive gear is not a replacement part for 20V engines by
either Audi nor Bosch. They prefer to sell a new distributor, which will
have a metal gear.
