The brushes are available for less than five bucks from the dealer.  No
need for alternator removal either.  Not a bad idea to disconnect the
battery, but can be done easily by taping the wires as their
disassembled.

Check Avi Meron's total alternator rebuild service in the Marketplace
and you can end up with more amps too.  He does the bearing replacement
as well as upgraded diodes, etc.
