[200q20v] Re: [200Q]: Transmission rebuild suggestions?

OK, here's the scoop on the '91 Tranny thing. I sent an email to the Robert
... guy and I got a response a couple of days later saying he no longer is
with the company. I don't know if anyone else has info. on where he might
have gone to. After hunting down used ones for $2500, new ones for much
more from Audi, $8k or so quoted from 2 dealers, I found the cheapest option
was getting it rebuilt. There is a company in Oregon called German
Transaxle. I believe the final cost for mine was about $2200. This was for
a lot of hard parts, though, including a new Torsen. Another guy that had
one rebuilt there that was not as seriously in need of repair was like
$1800. The shipping is cheapest if you get them to pay it both ways and
they bill you for it (since the tranny weighs over the 150 lb UPS limit).
As far as my mechanic knows, these are the only people in the country with a
significant supply of "hard parts" for reasonable dollars....of course they
won't just sell you the parts. I just got mine back about two weeks ago and
it works better than it ever did before. Turnaround time was only about 1
week. Hope this helps. One other thing that the mechanic I go to says
(Audi Master Mechanic with 25 years exp. on Porsches & Audis) is that before
the factory switched to synthetic oil he NEVER saw a manual tranny fail. He
has replaced or rebuilt about 20 trannies since, not ONE of them had been
running dinosaur oil at the time of failure. PS, I have dinosaur oil in
mine now :)

Subject: [200q20v] tire pressure to reduce understeer

I have Dunlop Sport D40 M2 tires (215/60-ZR15). It says max psi of 44 on the
sidewall. The gas filler door states 36f/36/r as recommended settings for
the stock tires under medium to light load. I haven't checked my pressure
lately, but I have noticed that the sidewalls are scrubbed quite
significantly. I drive hard through the twisties.

I'd like to adjust pressure to counter understeer. I'm assuming that higher
relative pressure in the rear will help in this regard. I did the opposite
with my RWD Miata for a noticeable reduction of oversteer. However, I've
noticed from the Audifans archives that many Audi Quattro drivers recommend
2-4 psi more in the front than in the rear.

Is this due to the fact that there is relatively more weight(59%/41%) over
the front wheels than, say, in a Miata?

I'm interested in knowing what pressures you are using and for what purpose?
What would you recommend to diminish the understeer?

I'm thinking of starting out with 36 in front and 40 in back.

I could of sworn I saw a $50 price claimed in the archives for ABS
sensors, the Boulder dealer says $170.

I already know I have a wretched memory, but I don't want to blow
2Cbucks if they are available for less.

The cheapest I could find was $75 for used ones, so
$50 new would be pretty unlikely.

Check with the fiche, and see what other cars the sensor matches with; then
hit a pick 'n pull yard. get several "misc. wiring harness" parts.

The brushes are available for less than five bucks from the dealer. No
need for alternator removal either. Not a bad idea to disconnect the
battery, but can be done easily by taping the wires as their
disassembled.

Check Avi Meron's total alternator rebuild service in the Marketplace
and you can end up with more amps too. He does the bearing replacement
as well as upgraded diodes, etc.

At least check the price at Carlsen Audi (Linda or Didi). They're
likely to be at least 25-30% cheaper than your local dealer. Not
available from TPD???? I wouldn't be surprised if Audi uses a generic
ABS sensor--similar to the situation with the oxy sensor.

For a while, there were brand new units available from germany; think that
source is entirely dried up. Might find a used 6-speed or other fun item,
though.

There is a gent in germany who bought up a boatload of Audi trannies from
Audi. I suggest contacting him and comparing cost of a rebuild to the
cost of getting a tranny from him. A few listers have already aquired
units from him and can probably give you their exact costs.

Note that the ABS sensors have rubber grommets on the
wire harness. While the sensors are the same across a
bunch of cars, the grommets are in different places
and will not fit into the slots on our cars. Not a big
deal, just though you might be interested.

Arun,

I got a new one from Robert Braunschweig in Germany. I had a growling sound
in all gears that was suspected to be the input shaft bearings. The only
email I have for him is this one: : rbraun at transtec.de and I am not sure if
it is still valid. Here's his phone number at Transtec: Tel.:
+49(0)7071/703-852.

It cost me $700 for the tranny and ~$190 for the shipping to Great Falls,
MT. - I did the customs myself and saved a couple hundered bucks I am told -
very easy to do yourself. Shop here (Missoula) charged me about $500 for the
R&R - All told it was less than $1500 installed. About 16 months prior to
that, I had 2nd gear replaced at a cost of about $1800 as I recall and 2
months after that, 5th gear synchro went to the tune of $1300. I wasn't
going to have mine worked on 3 times in less than 2 yrs!!

Thanks for all the tips, guys -- I have a call in to Robert
Braunschweig, and am exploring rebuilding options.

I went and took a look at the tranny -- it makes a clicking sound which
sounds very much like a broken ball race in a bearing. There were metal
pieces on the magnet, but there's no telling where they came from.

I'll keep y'all posted ... thanks, again!

I'm pretty sure the '91 200q20v has a different final drive ratio, so unless
you're also changing the rear diff, that won't work. The non-turbo might,

Subject: [200q20v] Wire EDM machine available for 200q20v parts

We have a new Brother Wire EDM machine that is not in use much, and can be
used to make steel (I'd rather not contaminate the filters with aluminum
work) parts for the '91 200q20v if anyone has any suggestions. It's
capacity is X=10" Y=16" Z=6"
I would be willing to make prototype parts in exchange for the sharing of
the technical information. Located in New Hampshire. I have a '91 200q20v
with 25k miles and a '01 S-8 with 300 miles.
