If the gauge position you describe is where I _think_ it is, that
doesn't seem like an indication of "too hot". My car tends to run
just slightly above the first three ticks (unless idling or driving
very slowly--in which case the needle will sometimes reach the center
of the gauge--i.e., vertical position). Some people think that's too
cool. I'd be a little concerned about your statement that "the fan
often goes on." Does this happen while the car is moving steadily or
at any significant speed? My fan goes on only after idling for a
couple of minutes or perhaps in stop and go traffic on a warm day.
BTW, is your replacement radiator an oem Audi (plastic) one--with
provision for connection to the auxilliary radiator, or is it a metal
radiator? If the latter, I assume that your the auxilliary radiator
was not by-passed(?)
