[200q20v] Bilstein Sports rear shock <clunk>

Steve,

I installed Bilstein HD's on my 91 Avant with stock springs last July.  At
the same time I installed 17" 2000 S4 wheels with Bridgestone RE 950's. I
reused the rubber bumpers, as I had no instructions telling me any different.


The car was noticeably louder while driving over small bumps and pavement
cracks, however no "clunks".

A few years ago I installed Koni Reds on my old 86 Avant, and promptly
noticed a loud "clunk".

The problem was the rear bushings, which I replaced and presto, no "clunk".

Perhaps the installation of new, stiff shocks amplified the noise from the
worn bushings.
