Either one of two things is usually the culprit. A bad solder connection on
the instrument "board" that houses the gauges or the speedometer pins are
touching each other. The speedo actually has two pins, very close to each
other and very long that "plug into" the dash instrument cluster board.
Sometimes these two can get bent "together" if you will and create an
intermittent short which causes the same symptom. Either way, you probably
need to take out the instrument cluster. Luckily it's not really that hard,
just be careful with all the 10 year old plastic on the connectors. I
believe the solder joint that is the usual offender is identified on Scott
Mockry's website.
