No, doesn't work.  When you (I) unload the wheel, the wheel weight is in the
opposite direction and of much lower magnitude than the normal bearing
supported weight.  So the fixed bearing outer races are loaded by wheel
weight on the opposite, like new, sides from the normal loading,  The inner
rotating races, of course, have had the bearing's lifes load equally
distributed around the total circumference, making no difference, other than
the reduced load effect.

So, your spring feel is no better than is the stethescope.  But thanks
anyway.
