Ya, I've been down that road before.  First GTI in High School had the
stereo setup.  Sounded great! Infinit amp, mids, and rockford tweets, then
ran two tens for bass.  Dont' remember what I used to fill in the back.  A
later incarnation then ran with a Soundstream amp.  It'd be interesting to
compare side by each how the sounds stack up, but I probably wouldn't put
all that junk in my trunk again.

My most recent install was a couple of years ago in an A2 GTI.  Decided to
run off deck power for the full range speakers and a powered bazooka for
low.  Ran Boston Acoustics all around for the full range with 2-piece
seprates up front (mids in door and tweets in dash), and 5x7 full range in
the back deck.  I had the same issue with the Boston highs, I thought it was
overpowering and very hissy.  Could have probably used some caps to lower
the output level.

I was anal as hell about that install, and it didn't happen overnight.  I
wanted to set it up so you couldn't tell anything was in the car; pulled it
off.  I was a little dissapointed with the sound quality though; too much
high, and the sound stage really didn't seem to envelope you.  I think the
right speakers were alway predominant.  Thought about purchasing a 4x20 or
4x30 amp to run the full range but...I'd already spent enough money.  Hell,
still got the Bazooka in my closet...in the box it came in.
