I noticed that my rear speakers each had a white "LEATHER" sticker on
the back of them. It's not a sure fire bet, but the replacements I
got didn't have this.
In any case, there's not much you can do except ask the previous
owner(s), and keep in mind...the replacements fail too. Someone at
AoA legal probably realized they were setting themselves up for one
sweet class-action lawsuit(nothing like providing replacements that
will fail just like the originals as a "fix" for the problem!)
If they fail, chances are you will immediately know. Failure modes
include heavy static, sometimes heavy thumping(I compare it to having
a sumo-wrestler sliding sideways down your back window.) The
failure-by-fire-mode thankfully seems to be rarer than the others,
but a small extinguisher is not a bad investment. I would recommend
one of the new foam types; they have, for their size, tremendous
coverage for oil/gas fires, but I don't remember what other classes
they cover. I think they're B/C, ie, oil/gas and electrical, not
paper, which is perfect for cars.) I think they make small foam
units that are available in sizes about the same as a 1l bottle of
soda(I know I've seen 2 litre sized units, but that's a little on the
big side for keeping inside the passenger compartment.)
