[200q20v] FW: oil temps

Tommy
My car runs about the same as yours. Highway is at the second line, which
I estimate to be 90-95 degrees C. The cooler opens around 80 degrees C as I
can see the oil pressure drop upon opening. It will run a little hotter if I
am in a lower gear which does not minimize rpm for a given speed.
On the track in south Florida I have seen temps in excess of 140 degrees C
(Mobil 1 15-50) even with vented fenderliners. The oil cooler is just not
big enough to handle the heat. I will be getting a bigger cooler. One lister
suggested old 911 cooler with some minor mods and was kind enough to send
pix. I did try the 2B mocal setup but saw NO improvement. When I told them
it did not work, they attempted to troubleshoot; after no improvement they
issued me a refund-class act IMHO.
Regards,
Jerry

Tommy,
The 90 temp you described sounds a bit cool to me. I've heard that we =
need temps slightly exceeding 100 degrees C in order to boil off =
moisture that condenses in the engine crankcase after cool-down. This =
scenario makes sense to me and the oil cooler thermostat is designed to =
adjust accordingly. Problems occur with petroleum based oil when it =
gets too hot (140 degrees C) and begins to break down, this break-down =
temperature is even higher with current synthetics. =20
