Adam:

Find another mechanic.

I replaced the first clutch on my 1991 200 20vTQW at 150 kmiles because of
problems with the pressure plate - there was still plenty of pad on the
clutch plate itself.

My CQ still has the original clutch at 150k miles.

Unless you are experiencing problems like a worn throw out bearing, or
issues of clutch slippage or too much pressure required to engage the
clutch (stiffened fingers on the pressure plate), there should be no need
to replace the clutch.

If you ARE going to do the clutch , then you should also replace the rear
main seal, repack the front inner cv joints and the driveshaft joints,
replace the front axle seals (if they are leaking), check and replace the
transmission mounts if needed, etc.

In order to replace the clutch, you need to drop the exhaust , driveshaft,
and transmission.
Which is more easily done with the car on a lift instead of jackstands...
