The non-flared car doesn't have much clearance room. Seem to recall Scott
Mockry writing a bit about that on his site http://www.sjmautotechnik.com
The rear brake hat isn't the clearance issue; it is a fairly thin piece of
steel over a wheel hub (the top of the rotor hat), that sets the wheel
offset. Only reason to do a deeper hat is if the caliper is interfering with
the wheel, and then you've got issues with bearing carrier clearances, and
with making custom caliper mounts.
Igor Kessel flared the rear fenders of his 200; some success, but certainly
not something you'd confuse with factory.
