Intercooler leaking (?)

I have a boost leak in my '91 2KTQ-20V---90K miles, IA Stage-3 chip, otherwise stock. My mechanic has removed the intercooler & says he believes it's leaking. I have not looked at it yet. Is this a common problem? Where is the best place to get a replacement? Are there any non-plastic alternatives? Many thanks,
