I have my doubts about how helpful clear packing tape
would be in the event of an impact, but I'm sure it's
better than having nothing on your lights at all.

Haven't seen this mentioned yet but Griot's garage has
small sheets 10"X16" for $23... not exactly cheap but
it is a nice cut to fit vinyl about the thickness of a
dime.
