column in/out process for ign key and steering lock

Looking for BTDT on steering column removal/install.
I had to yank mine yesterday thanks to going to have tree
sap washed off and the drying crew at the drivethru managed
to break something.

First, I'm going to find the Bentley guy who wrote "press
down the column and remove the locking cylinder".  Yeah right!

Then I hope somebody can recommend an easier way of getting
the column squeezed between the clump of wires at the edge of
the dashboard and the air duct that routes behind the IC.  I
was sure I was going to wreck something, but didn't do any
damage this time.

Anybody ???
