Squeaking door check (or hinges?)

Mike,
I'm going to guess that you're looking in the wrong place (door hinges). My
BTDT tells me that that noise is almost always the door stop strap, roller,
and spring mechanism. Inside the door is an "s" shaped spring that the stop
strap glides (or groans) in and out of when operating the door. The problem
is that there are rollers that are given a small amount of grease from the
factory... they dry up, the roller sticks, and then groan as the stop strap
grinds over the seized roller. Sometimes you can get lucky, remove and
grease... but usually a flat spot has been worn into the roller, and it'll
never work really well.
Strap assemblies run about $20 each, They install in the door with 2 allen
head bolts, and into the body with a roll pin. IME, it's best to remove the
door panels to replace them. It's a bit tight, a pain, and a fairly annoying
job... but sure beats the ongoing odd looks from passengers everytime you
open a door.
HTH,
Dave
