I don't remember if this was specified or not, but if your problem is
intermitent I would think it's not the timing belt. If it is a constant
problem, to check timing belt alignment I believe there's a mark for the
crank visible through an opening in the bell housing of the tranny. If you
can line that up, then remove the cap on the distributor, the rotor should
be pointing at a tick mark on the rim of the distributor. Bad timing
wouldn't necesarily indicate a bad timing belt and vice versa, just
misalignment.
You can also check at the timing belt end of the engine for alignment
between the cam drive sprocket and the head, but I think it's kind of a bear
to remove the timing belt cover. If the distributor lines up with the crank
at tdc, by default the cam should be timed correctly relative to the crank
as well.
Sorry can't provide any things to check for, only ways to eliminate
variables. If you're worried about vacuum leak, try the compressor via 3"
connector trick as circulating several weeks ago. A lot cheaper than hose
cut and paste.
While no btdt, I don't think carb cleaner would be damaging to the MAF, but
because of the "self-cleaning action" designed into the part, I'd think
that's low probability as well, but...

Vacuum leak is what I suspected as well, at least it's cheaper and less
threatening than a timing belt failure.
Idle is 800 rpm
boost readout (CPU indicated) is 0.5, sometimes 0.6, but never 0.4
unless decelerating
I will take another look at SJM's site and the back of my engine, could
be ordering another $90 hose :(
On another note, how does one clean the MAF sensor? Is carb cleaner too
abrasive? I heard that electrode contact cleaner works well.
Thanks!
Joseph
