Voltage Regulator

The voltage regulator is located at the rear of the alternator and is a
combination voltage regulator/brush pack. Tought to get to, especially with
the plastic cooling shroud covering it (if present).
From my experience, the voltage regulator itself tends not to go bad, but
the brushes wear out, preventing the alternator from charging the battery.
Erratic voltage or (more likely) no charging followed by battery light
coming on are typical symptoms. Of course, you may just have a loose or
missing (BTDT) alt belt....
