air/fuel mixture gauge sensors?

What does and air/fuel mixture gauge need in order for it to work? I've heard
that there are two sensors. One that gets welded somewhere on the exhaust and
one that i goes on the engine block (needs a hole to be made?) Is that true or
is there an easier way of doing this with no welds and no holes? Wiring it
into the ECU? How do you guys do this?
