My car is doing this too.

It appears loudest between 3k-4k rpm.  Kind of like a
wheezing sound like something is running out of air.

I've been told by some that this could portend the
death of my compressor.  I've toyed with the idea of
adding extra compressor oil since it doesn't hurt to
add a little extra.  Not sure where to find R12
specific oil now though.

I figured a bit of oil can't hurt because:
1- it's cheap
2- A/C still blows cold
3- I was getting a little oil seepage at the
compressor in the last 2 years.
