Alternator no longer ailing

No, breakdown in wiring shorted out the field.  He showed me the stator
ring with broken wires.  Said it happens regularly because the housing is
aluminum, the ring is steel with copper wiring and all the different metals
in a moist setting result in significant corroding.  The corroding lets
shorting occur.  The excess moisture from the slush I drove through
probably heightened the arcing enough to cause stressed wiring to fail.
