Cold Air Coming from Passenger Footwell

There's a flap in the firewall behind the glovebox that is used when the
A/C is engaged to take cooled air from the cabin through the air intake
system so the A/C isn't always cooling new outside air. The Audi approach
is to hold the flap closed with a spring when A/C is not turned on and hold
it open with a vacuum motor when A/C is on. If the spring or its plastic
mount break, the door hangs open and you get fresh air from outside
migrating into the passenger footwell. You also get a very sudden thorough
fogging of the windows in cold, moist atmospheric conditions that worsens
when you turn on the defrosters because the system then is mixing warm air
from the cabin with the cold air from outside.
To check for the broken spring/mount circumstance, you put your head in the
passenger footwell and look up past the back of the glovebox with a
flashlight. The repair procedures (either broken spring or failed plastic
mount) are described well in the archives. Do a Google search on the
Audifans.com website for window fogging.
