Suggestions for preventing rear E-brake lockup

I recently replaced my right side e-brake cable. Not too much fun!! Pull the
e-brake, then release it and see if the cam returns all the way. Then remove
the brake cable ball end from the cam, pry cam to the brake position with a
big screw driver and see if it returns all the way. Now you can also push
and pull on the brake cable ball end, to see how freely it moves.  My old
brake cable had a break in it, right near where it is supported at the rear
frame.  HTH
