Stock wheel surface damage???

Hello listers...

I have had a real problem with some surface damage that has occurred on my
stock BBSs from 10 years in the fine salt bedded state of Minnesota.  There
appears to be some sort of black surface stain or other contaminent that has
either eaten its way through the clear coat or has been so neglected by the PO
that it just doesn't want to come off.  I have tried dedicated aluminum wheel
cleaners, simple green, an assortment of brushes, and of course "elbow
grease."

I suppose my issue to you all is whether this contaminent/stain will ever come
off the wheel.  Is there any trick to getting this stuff off, I have to
imagine others from the salt belt have this issue from PO's?  Another Audi
Comrade suggested spraying brake cleaner on the rim carefully that may eat it
off if it is built up brake dust.  This sounds a bit risky with a fragile
clear coat.  Has anyone tried this?  Would professional wheel refinishing
help?  Last time I checked that's pretty pricey and with that money I could be
well on my way to a new set of rims.  Any help on this would be greatly
appreciated.
