Peter,
The eventual fix is not a surprise to me. I changed the crank timing
belt pulleys on both my 200 and on my wife's old 1993 90. In her case,
it was partially sheared. In my case, it was broken but still there.
As these are both older cars, I suspect the crank bolt was not tightened
enough by previous t-belt replacers.
