hi all, new to the list! i'm beginning my search for
another car and thought i'd bounce some ideas off
y'all:

my research has come to the audi 200. i saw a list
member's red one and fell in love. seem like great
cars and the interior quality is exceptional. not to
mention a turbocharged multivalve engine with a 5
speed and AWD is hard to pass up for the price. hard
to find.

a 1992+ BMW M5 (6 cylinder). a friend has one, real
nice and fast, but being they are going for 23K+ with
over 110K on the clock, they just seem so expensive.

1989-1991 mercedes benz 560SEC. love those land
yachts! they are obtainable for 12-14K for good ones.
but, that's a lot of money considering the age and the
price for repairs. but, it was 82K new, it's a fair
deal. so it's still in the running.

lastly, the smart money is on waiting until next year
and getting a 2000 A6 2.7T quattro with a 6 speed
coming off of lease. but, then i'd have to get a car
loan. the loan might put of my ability to get a house
as it increase my debt ratio in the eyes of a bank.

any insights? the one thing i've learned is that the
SHO will be my LAST american car. i've had it with the
shoddy built quality and cut rate engineering. the
only impressive part of the car is the engine...and
that was built by yamaha! japanese cars are nice as
well, but there is something to be said for the soul
of german sport sedans.

i've blabbed on enough.

thanks,
Robby

Robby-

The '91 200q 20v is a very good car. In comparison to the
others you mention, they are quite different.

I haven't driven a MB SEC, but my impression is that they
are big, heavy cars and that they feel very big and heavy
as well. Very very nice cars, they cost over $81k in '91,
but you better be absolutely sure that the car has been
maintained to a very high standard or the cost of repairs on
this complex car will kill you. They are underpowered compared
to the '91 200q and the '91+ M5.

Having driven the E34 M5 ('91-'93 in the States, very few '94s),
I can say that the car is exceptionally good. Very strong engine,
excellent handling, very well built car. Weaknesses include the
timing chain and tensioner once you hit the 100k+ mile mark, any
major repairs to the engine of this car will cost you a lot. The
rest of the car is basically the same as any other E34, nothing
particularly expensive, although the sport seats are different,
the suspension and brakes are different, and some trim pieces are
different- rear filler piece in the license plate recess, different
air dam and color-keyed side skirts, brake cooling ducts, different
mirrors (same as E36 M3) on the '93s, etc.

It really depends on what you want. If I only needed this car for
fair weather conditions, I'd go with the M5- it's a far better drive
than the Audi or Benz. However, if I needed something that could go
year-round, I'd get the Audi (which I did). To me, the Benz is an
old man's car, and I wouldn't get one because they don't excite me,
except for the old AMG models.

If you want to go apples to apples, I'd consider the MB 500E/E500
(W124 chassis) to compare with the M5 and 200. Other thing to consider
is that the 200q20v and the M5 only come in manual transmission and
the Benz only comes in automatic transmission.

I really dislike automatic transmissions, so the Benz would be out
just for that reason alone.

I have to say that the MB SEC is _very_ underbraked, so bad that the
200q20v/V8 with G60 brakes is great in comparison..

Tom,

I would air up the tires to a minimum of 40 PSI and maybe as high as 45
PSI.
With the stock suspension expect a fair amount of body roll. The car will
want to understeer in tight corners so slow down entering and have fun
exiting with the boost. Have a fun time.

I took mine to the shop and it was diagnosed as a broken trans mount. I
will tell you if that fixes the problem when I get back in town in a couple
of weeks. should cost about $130 installed at local audi wrench

Subject: Right-Turn Noise?

Anyone have any insight as to a recent noise - more of minor
vibration/groan
noticeable in the pedals/floor - while turning to the right? Not really
audible, but definitely there. No indications of bearing issues - though
have not explored in detail. No noises/symptoms when going straight or
turning left. Noise/feel is evident at even the slightest steering input
to
the right. Is this indicative of imminent rack failure? Never lost one so
I'm unfamiliar. No leaks/puddles. Fluid levels normal, etc.. I realize
it's very difficult to diagnose such things w/ only a verbal description,
but
thought it might be a somewhat common issue. TIA

What are the current choices for a radiator, until the
Nissens get imported:

1) Stock (obviously)
2) Modine all-plastic (where can you get these?)
3) Custom from radiator shop
4) Something else?

Thanks,

Since suppliers apparently remain non-forthcoming regarding importing the
Nissens all-metal radiator designed specifically to fit the 200q20v, the
reasonable options remain the OEM model with plastic tanks and endcaps and
aluminum core, or the Modine of similar make-up. The latter MAY be a bit
cheaper???? Not sure it comes with the appropriate fittings for the
auxiliary radiator hoses. Radiator.com has an "oem-equivalent" for $157
listed.

No BTDT for me yet.

I was always curious to know if that was the case, having seen a
560SEC with its wheels off on the lift- tiny little brakes for such
a huge car.
