CV boot replacement: stripped inner cv joint bolts

Ed,

Feeling for you......I've had many a Monday morning with all not over from
the weekends car maintenance. Ugh!

Having a 200 20v, a few VW's and a Porsche, which all have some sort of
unique head pattern to the cv-to-trans flange bolts, I've encountered my
share of stripped ones.

Sometimes it's my own fault for not cleaning out the heads with a shot or
two of brake cleaner before putting some force on them. The dirt and grime
can prevent the tool from being fully inserted, thus putting all the stress
on 1/2 of the surface area.

At any rate,I have always (knock on wood) managed to get them out by
hammering in the tool (as others have said) being sure it in all the way
before trying to turn the bolt.  Sometimes it takes a different shaped tool
and possibly the next larger size. Hopefully that's all it will take to get
you going.

I was indeed using the wrong tool.  These bolts have 12 points not six
which means they are not Torx bolts, but I was using Torx bits on them.
I just didn't even look or notice.  Stupid, stupid.  I did get 3 of them
loose.  But the other 3 are somewhat stripped.  My only hope now is that
there will be enough left that the proper tool will still be able to
work.

Thanks to Mike and Gary Andersone for pointing this out to me.

Triple square is it?  I'll be tool shopping tomorrow.
