Bernie:
You can add an external restrictor (metal band) to the existing hose that
eliminates most of the groaning, but not all of it, btdt.  You are quite
correct that the hose design from audi is well designed to address the pump
resonance.   Any replacement other than the stock hose will not be as quiet,
but will perform the correct function.
