LED Replacement?

As mentioned, good writeup on 20v.org. They really just kind of push out
from behind the console, which requires taking off the side panel(s). Be
gentle, I recommend warmer ambient temperatures for disassembly, if you
have a choice, for reduced old-plastic brittleness. Actually the seat
heater switches are mini-bulbs that need to be soldered (can get from Radio
Shack), and the other pushbutton switches have socketed small bulbs you get
from the dealer or good parts source. No LEDs involved unless you are
upgrading.

1991 200 quattro, 118k, center console bulbs replaced, window switches
fine, instrument panel bulbs fine, mirror controller unlighted since I got
it, let smoke out of rear diff switch bulb when playing with center console
switches
1988 GTI 16v, 235k, all three instrument panel bulbs have been replaced,
one preemptively
