dash display saying empty when i have 1/2 tank?

Had my miles to empty reading too high recently.  I would be almost empty and
it would read 1000 miles to empty.  Filled the tank and the display appeared
to correct its self, than starting reading more miles to empty the lower my
tank would get.  On the next fill, it corrected its self and has been fine for
the past two weeks.  Haven't a clue what it was?
