Brake Pad Warning Light Behavior

Dear Audist Think-Tank Members,

I'm occasionally receiving a "warning light" about my front brake pads 
while driving; the next time I start the car the light is absent for the 
entire trip.  I'd like to postpone replacement as long as possible.  Can 
I safely (without metal-to-metal contact) wait until the light is 
continuous,  or is this behavior as significant as it gets?
